You have just brought home a new dog, maybe a rescue, or a new puppy!  How Exciting!  My Question is …  “Are you learning to train a new dog or a puppy?”

Are you familiar with dog training, or are you just starting out learning how to train your new arrival?

If you are familiar with dog training, you may have already started the training process right from day one!

Maybe, it is a long time since you have trained a dog and are wondering who can help you.

I recommend that you seek input from a professional dog trainer.  Of course, I can hear you say, you are simply promoting yourself!

Yes, I am, however where you live may make that unmanageable to come and learn from me. Of course, we can always train with lessons online, however, your time zone in the world may make this unmanageable as well.

So, let’s first talk about what you could start doing at home as soon as you bring your new friend into your household.

Hopefully, you have already booked your new dog or puppy into a training class to suit the age group.  While you are waiting to join the new training class, you can start your companion learning how your household runs.

For instance, hopefully, you have chosen to let your puppy or new dog sleep in a crate in or very near to your bedroom so that you can be alerted if there needs to be a toilet break during the night.

To get your dog familiar with the crate you can start by placing some very tasty treats on the floor in a line leading to the crate opening.  Once your dog eats and follows the treats to the door, with a happy voice call your dog back to you to receive another treat.   Make this a very short distance.

Continue doing this until you can gradually put a treat or two inside the crate.  “Are you learning to train a new dog or puppy?”  You certainly are, as you have already started a simple training session that your dog will enjoy as you make it fun.  Your dog may even have fun going to inspect a toy in the crate.

Once your dog is happily doing this, it will be much easier to encourage your dog into the crate for his or her first night at your home.

Your dog is disturbed during the night, so, put a leash on your dog, take your dog outside, and your dog toilets!  What has happened here?   You have made a very sound judgment decision; your dog has obliged, and this is the start of another training procedure.

I take a new dog or puppy outside on a leash for the doggie pee-pees or do-dos right from the start and continue to do so until I am aware that my dog ‘gets it’.

You can also think of helping your dog to come happily to you at feeding time.   Prepare the meal, if your dog is in the kitchen with you they will know the food is being prepared, when the meal is ready let them see the bowl and you start moving backward with the dish calling their name, and your hungry pup or dog will eagerly follow after you.

This creates a happy theme for mealtime and helps your dog understand that coming to you when called has lots of benefits.  This procedure is the start of the recall process.  As you can see some training principles are now underway and you will have prepared your new dog or puppy to learn more cues when you start at your chosen training facility.

Enjoy the process as training a new dog or puppy has such amazing results as it builds a bond between the both of you!

The question “Are you learning to train a new dog or puppy?” can be answered with a “Yes”, and you will have the satisfaction that you have already started the process right from the first time you introduce your new companion to your household.
