How Do You Go About Bathing Your Dog?

You have decided it is time to bathe your dog, “How do you go about bathing your dog?”  Does your dog water, dislike water or simply hates being wet?

If you have collected a new puppy, I am hoping the breeder has completed all tasks and offered your new puppy to you completely clean, not to mention a how-to list being offered which outlines how to feed, when to worm, when vaccinations are required, and how to help your puppy assimilate into your household to name a few suggestions.

It is so lovely being able to smell a freshly bathed puppy who has a milky breath.  Some of my friends wax lyrical about how refreshing and sweet smelling a new puppy’s breathy is!

If your puppy is of the size where you can bathe him or her in the laundry tub, that is a plus as you will not need any special bathing tubs.  If this is the case, you can place a spray arm onto the tap outlet to make it easier to spray your new puppy or dog all over their body.  Remember, their head and ears need to be protected from the spraying water.

If your dog struggles stressfully in your laundry tub, I always speak soothing calming words to them, you could even have calming music playing in the background.  Make the bathing as quick as possible to alleviate your dog’s stress levels.

Do you ask friends or family that have pets “How do you go about bathing your dog?”  Friends or family can be a wealth of knowledge and may provide some really good pointers.

I have in the past, when I was showing my dogs in the show ring, purchased a special blow-dryer for dogs, plus I also had a groomer’s table where my dogs could stand attached to a leash on a leash arm and be blow-dried, brushed, and combed.  As the table was at a height where I could work comfortably, this gave me the opportunity to groom and help my dogs look as beautiful as possible.

I have also used baby baths in the past where I could bathe my dogs outside.  Of course, this bath was filled with warm water and once the shampooing was completed, I would empty out the bath and have ready some buckets of warm water to rinse off the soap.  You guessed it, my dog would be rinsed standing in the now empty bath.

I am nearly embarrassed to let you know how I bathe my dogs these days!

My three Australian Kelpies are bathed under a running hose… oops!  You may be thinking, why would you do that?

To reply, I still have buckets of warmish water with shampoo to give them a good rub over and I still have buckets of warmish water to wash off the shampoo.

However, I do initially spray them over with a hose, then the warmish water with the shampoo to bathe them, then a quick spray with the hose, followed by the clean buckets of warmish water to finish off the removal of shampoo.

They do not mind this, I am not going to say, they get all excited when they see me getting all this bathing stuff ready, I do need to go after them, put a collar and leash on them, and bring them back to the bathing area, but I speak soothingly to them and tell them how good they are.

They love to shake off the water and then the zoomies around the yard are such fun to do together to dry themselves.  Once all three are bathed, they all love to be rubbed with a towel to dry their fur.  They jostle together for this pick position.  “Me first”, and “Me first” is I am sure part of their vocabulary.  They just keep coming back for more and more towel rubs.

Now you know how our bath-time events are managed, so “How do you go about bathing your dog?”
