Have you ever travelled with a friend to a destination when you both have a dog or dogs? I have with great success and am delighted to share with you how to travel in two cars when you have a dog or dogs.
One particular friend and I have travelled together on many occasions with our dogs.
Did we travel in one car? No! We each had our own car and tagged together along our chosen highways and roads. Was it fun? Yes!

Would I recommend this way of travel? Yes!
We both had a common interest in dogs, similar moral values, similar work ethic and a similar view of cooking! We both were not interested in cooking meals, however, we both loved food, but had different food tastes, which was hilarious.
I love a good balanced healthy meal and my friend loved take-away food. So how did we compromise? We had a turnabout, one time we would eat a healthy meal, another time we would eat a takeaway meal. We also had turns cooking, mind you, my friend was handier in the kitchen than I!
I made sure we ate fruit and vegetables, whilst my friend would make sure we ate what I would call “easy” food.
We both also had no sense of navigation skills from one place to another, and whilst we used a navigation process, sometimes I didn’t fill in the destination route correctly and we would travel kilometres out of our way and goodness didn’t I hear about it for months afterwards. To this day I still chuckle at our adventures.
As I had built up some great references at different places where I had stayed with my dogs, we were able to use my references to book our accommodation. On one occasion we rented a very beautiful home on a large block with six dogs between us and were allowed to take our dogs inside with a few do’s and do not’s which we adhered to.
Here are some more tips on how to travel in two cars when you have a dog or dogs. I am sure the luggage we packed was more for the dogs than ourselves! We would stop every two hours or every ninety minutes for a break, to see if the dogs were thirsty or needed a toilet break, as we certainly needed time to stretch ourselves. We would take the dogs for a walk or a play in a park, have a drink ourselves plus eat a tasty snack before we headed off again.
Lunch times were always a longer stay. On one occasion it was quite cold and my friend’s dogs decided to go swimming in a muddy river, and I mean muddy. The previous day I had bathed my dogs, all long-coated dogs and of course they wanted to be with their playmates.
So here they were drenched and muddy, and the only place I could get the mud off them was in a town centre with a park that allowed me to use their hose. My poor dogs had to be hosed with freezing water! That was a talking point for ages with much friendly banter back and forth.
We would only travel six or seven hours at the most each day, this allowed us to settle into our booked accommodation, and relax with the dogs exploring the area before our dinner time, with a quick walk again before bedtime. We always had accommodation where the dogs were allowed inside with us, and we abided by the requests that the motel owners asked us to adhere to. After all, we were grateful for being able to have our dogs with us.
Another tip is that the dogs travelling together must all get on with each other, be very mindful of this aspect, otherwise, the journey would be a huge challenge that you would not wish to repeat again.
We would decide before each section of our journey who would be the lead car, sometimes we would choose to have a turnabout as the lead car, sometimes not. What we did have in our cars was a two-way device to talk to each other which was especially helpful if we were driving through an area that we thought may be a good place to stop and explore.
This is how to travel in two cars when you have a dog or dogs and if you simply follow the above suggestions and adjust it to your personalities, this will and does work and is so much fun.
